Edition notes
About this edition
This reading edition organizes Ganguli’s translation into all eighteen major books, with 2,111 reading units and 3,820 edition notes. It includes the translator’s preface; the Harivamsa supplement is not included.
The documented repairs below were checked against printed Ganguli editions. Other wording follows the supplied digital transcription. This is not a new translation or a word-by-word scholarly collation of the entire epic.
What this draft preserves
The narrative and edition notes follow the four stored source volumes of Ganguli’s translation. The translator’s preface is restored from the source. Repeated title pages and digitization boilerplate are separated from the literary reading text. The Harivamsa supplement is not included in these four volumes.
Except for the documented scan-supported repairs, sections retain their source prose and punctuation; line wrapping is normalized for reading. Arabic numbers in navigation correspond to the source’s Roman or Arabic section numbers. Footnotes are separate and linked where the source has a matching numbered marker.
Known textual and numbering issues
- Book 1, sections 175–177: transposed prose has been returned to its proper sections. The printed wording restores “confestly” and joins the broken word “marshes”. Printed pages 399–401.
- Book 12, sections 354–366: two omitted section breaks are restored, and the intervening headings are corrected. Section 364 was present under the wrong number; no narrative was missing here. Section 355, section 364, section 366.
- Book 12, note 1407: the unreadable marker is restored to “it”. Printed page 487.
- Book 2, section 67: the missing break is restored at Bhima’s speech, following the source editor’s errata.
- Remaining combined units: Book 7 sections 53–55 and 188–189, and Book 12 sections 34–35, retain combined navigation. Their internal boundaries have not been independently established.
Original digital source files are preserved unchanged. Repairs are applied by the edition builder and recorded with before-and-after hashes and scan references.
